Hey all,
Whilst we in Australia use the "patch" system of grading, and in some places overseas they use the "belt" system, common sense tells me that the "patch" system is universally the same in places that use it. Having said that I found on this page:

http://www.kravmaga.com.au/FAQs/Krav-Maga-Grading-Questions/Do-you-wear-belts-in-Krav-Maga.html

It seems to show patches for Practitioner 1,3 & 4, and Graduate 1,2 & 5 whilst stating they are the first three levels of either grade.
Just thought i'd mention that, but hey I'm new so as I said......correct me if i'm wrong

IKMF uses patches  - the belts are used by other krav maga systems (i think the american one uses belts). From what I understand, patches were brought in so that we would not need to wear the traditional martial arts apparel complete with belts which are unrealistic and very disimilar to street wear. With more 'regular' clothes ie pants and a t-shirt, we become more familiar with our techniques in that attire - which, if we should ever need our krav in a real situation, will be more comfortable than if we were used to training in fancy outfits. IKMF used to use belts and judo outfits but they changed over to the regular clothes and patches for this reason, I believe.

That is a bit of a technincal error there on the link, its not the first three levels. Its the 1st, 3rd and 4th of P levels and 1st, 2nd, 5th of the G-levels

G'day Guys,

Jeremy is right. All over the world, the IKMF uses patches and has done for some time now. He is also right in that the American Krav Maga Association uses a belt system, although they don't generally wear them when training. They also often refer to their belts as levels eg. level 1 = yellow belt etc. The KMAA levels are not analagous to the levels used by IKMF though so it can be a bit confusing when you are talking to KMAA guys.

Cheers,

Andy

Yes it was a typo on the site and it now has been fixed to read that the images represent various examples of each of Graduate and Practitioner patches. So thanks for letting us know!
